Ontario drivers can now carry electronic proof of auto insurance on their mobile device.
Gone are the days in Ontario when the only acceptable form of proof of auto insurance was to show your paper "pink slip". Effective immediately, the province of Ontario has announced that carrying electronic proof of insurance is acceptable too.
Ontario is the fourth province in the country to take these steps. Electronic proof of auto insurance is also accepted in Alberta, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador.
"Our Government has committed to making life easier for Ontario people," said Finance Minister Rod Phillips. "That is why this government is making auto insurance more convenient by giving drivers the option of showing their proof of auto insurance electronically, so that drivers can access their insurance card in the way that best suits their needs."
Insurance Bureau of Canada welcomes the initiative
Being able to show electronic proof of auto insurance is an initiative that the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) has been advocating for some time and applauds.
"Ontario's auto insurers welcome the government's decision to allow electronic proof of insurance for Ontario drivers. In all other sectors that consumers interact with - from banking to retail to cell phone providers - consumers are offered a choice and we are pleased to now be able to offer consumers that same choice. This marks another step is making insurance easier for Ontarians and we look forward to working with this government to bring more choice and innovation to the market, " said the Insurance Bureau of Canada.
It's a move that's likely to appeal to Ontario drivers as well. An IBC survey found that 74 percent of Ontario drivers would prefer to have electronic proof of auto insurance instead of the antiquated paper proof.
