(Update: The ecoAUTO rebate program concluded its 2-year run on March 31, 2009.)
Are you running out of gas and patience for the ever-increasing cost of fuel? Then perhaps the federal government's initiative in the March 2007 budget to offer rebates has you thinking about fuel-efficient vehicles? After all, if you're considering buying a new vehicle, getting one that is eligible for a rebate because it is fuel-efficient while spending less at the pumps, might be the way to go to save some money.
So exactly what vehicles are eligible for the rebate? Many people are wondering if the only vehicles are hybrids. The good news is they are not the only eligible vehicles. If hybrids are not your thing, there are not only non-hybrid vehicles eligible for the rebate but also Flex-Fuel vehicles. Flexible fuel vehicles (FFVs) are designed to run on gasoline or a blend of up to 85% ethanol (E85). While you may not be able to name a flex-fuel vehicle off the top of your head, you'd be surprised at how many vehicles out there are available with this option.
What criteria determines a vehicle's eligibility for the rebate?
According to Transport Canada's website, the list of eligible vehicles currently includes "New cars getting 6.5 L/100km or better and new light trucks getting 8.3 L/100km or better. The list features hybrid electric and highly energy efficient vehicles. In addition, new flexible-fuel vehicles with combined fuel consumption E85 ratings of 13.0 L/100km or less will be eligible."
