The provinces where Kanetix currently offers auto collision coverage quotes were used for the study, including: Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia.
Of the total collision insurance quotes completed in 2006, 17 per cent included at least one accident during the last 10 years.
Collision coverage in the larger cities
The provinces with the largest cities, produced the largest number of accidents, with 18% of drivers in both Ontario and Quebec having at least one collision, increasing the total average statistics. Compare this to the other extreme, which showed that 12% and 14% of drivers in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia were in accidents in the last 10 years, respectively.
Accidents and road rage are nothing new in provinces which contain the bigger cities. In a study which was recently written and published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, scientists from the University of Toronto studied the responses from a 2005 survey from all provinces and determined the number of people who has been in a situation of road rage and the results were staggering, concluding that 41% had been victims. So can we say that drivers in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia are the best drivers in Canada, almost 50% better then their counterparts in Ontario? Not necessarily, says Gregory Ellis Co-founder of Kanetix.ca, "The results from the collision coverage data show that the provinces with the highest percentage of accidents are also the provinces with the most population. Typically, with more people living in these highly populated provinces, the more drivers there are on the roads and the greater the chance for an accident."
